Ender’s Game Film Synopsis Revealed

As we countdown 347 days till the film release, Summit Entertainment has revealed the full synopsis for the Ender’s Game film. (via collider) For fans of the series the synopsis isn’t a big revelation but for those who haven’t read the book and are looking forward to the movie I agree with collider in that, though it isn’t a spoiler of the whole novel, it explains more than necessary information upon the progression of Ender’s promotions in and from Battle School.

With the release date of November 1, 2013 here is the full synopsis for the Ender’s Game film:

In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

A novel in a nutshell? The synopsis is spot on but I still feel it has more than necessary details than those who haven’t read the book need to know.

What do you think of the synopsis? Feel it fits the story fine? Or TMI? Let us know in the comments.

Ender’s Game At Breaking Dawn Part II Premiere

Did you ever think the Twilight saga was in any way related to Ender’s Game?

Well in a small way it is. In the premiere for the last installment of the saga Andrea Powell, who plays Mrs. Wiggin in Ender’s Game, plays Sasha from the Denali Clan, the founder of the Denali vampires. She is walking the black carpet of the Breaking Dawn Part II premiere along with Aramis Knight, who plays Bean.

Aramis is attending to promote Ender’s Game and has promised some pictures of his experience and hopefully as they both went back and forth on twitter we can get a picture of their reunion.

UPDATE: We got some pictures of Aramis at the premiere (Thank you Ro for the tip). Also, we got this from Asa Butterfield via Twitter:

Visual Effects In Ender’s Game Film

There has been a buzz lately regarding the visual effects in the Ender’s Game film. China Daily recently interviewed vice chairperson Ivy Zhong of Galloping Horse, the company that acquired Digital Domain (along with Reliance Mediaworks) and the magic hands behind the visual effects of the Ender’s Game film. Still having a stake in the film’s production they got to speak with Ivy Zhong who mentioned that:

About 60 percent of the film, focusing on conflicts between humankind and aliens in the Earth’s future, features special visual effects.

It’s pretty much known that the battle room is going to be apart of this percentage and the rest may include flashbacks to the war and visuals of the buggers and the bugger queen. Even from the previous failed projects of making Ender’s Game there was always the notion of a big part of the film to be visual effects.

Ender’s Game is set to release on November 1, 2013. Don’t forget to follow us on the links to the right of the site.

An Interview With Orson Scott Card

Happy Halloween Launchies! I apologize for the lack of updates but I have been meaning to get this piece up for awhile. So trick-or-treat!

SPOILER ALERT: This interview talks about the following books Earth Unaware, Ender’s Game, Enchantment and Magic Street. (All by OSC; if you didn’t know) If you wish to keep clear of any spoilers do not read on or listen to the interview.

I warned you.

Back in the old days of October 16th 2012, a website named The Speculators’ Club got the chance to interview none other than our favorite author Orson Scott Card. They have posted a podcast of the interview but unfortunately it’s not embedded and only downloadable to a new window meaning I cannot post the actual interview on here but I will share the link to the post courtesy of the The Speculators’ Club.

The podcast begins with OSC talking about his expansion of the Ender verse and how he came about to write Earth Unaware. He gives a descriptive summary of Earth Unaware so, again, if you don’t want any spoilers fast forward.

He mentions that Earth Unaware is possibly going to stretch to three books, for those who haven’t heard. Also, he hints (and further corrects) that they are in development to work the story out as a TV series. As OSC says they haven’t signed with any network or have a deal for this (yet, anyway) so do not take this as an official announcement.

OSC continues with a discussion of how he projects his character development, and how he comes to create a character in his stories.

Then finally Speculator’s club brings up the burning topic that everyone would love to discuss with OSC at this point, the Ender’s Game movie! (gasp). And off the bat one thing he puts into perspective, that I believe every fan of Ender’s Game should truly engrave into their heads (especially those holding on to the idea of having every scene and detail of the book in the movie) “the actual story as written in the novel cannot be filmed.” -Orson Scott Card; author of Ender’s Game.

OSC talks about the novel’s perspective being of Ender but when outside of his head we only see his actions which label him as “a violent little kid.” Pointing out that motives are a key ingredient in this piece. This brings up the question that many have contemplated when the movie was first announced, how is director Gavin Hood going to translate the perspective of Ender Wiggin to film in a media where point of view is expressed differently in both book and film?

Card further goes on to speak about the film’s script and says that the production crew are making the “best movie they can, out of the script that they have.” Further into the interview he states that he, himself, believes that with the right techniques of the digital construction of the battle room and having the right actor playing Ender will grant the movie a good opening weekend.

As the author of the book that the film is based upon, we know OSC had visited the set while filming. He has also gone over the script, though the one in use is not his adaption, we know that he approves of the current one and approves of the actors (specifically he named Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford) and that they have a great chemistry when filming. I’ve said this with other book-to-film adaptions and it’s just the same with EG. If the author approves of the production of the filming then us fans need not worry about the films accurate translation of the book. We are getting basically a thumbs up by the creator of the story. They know the book well enough then we do to say if the director and actors are making an accurate portrayal of the novel. Let’s trust the pen master and go with the big opening weekend we all want for our favorite book to have.

Concluding the interview OSC makes some recommendations of his work. It’s suggested you should read “Enchantment” and “Magic Street”. They are independent novels that have no series. Allowing them to stand alone. Which also have it’s own disadvantages in popularity because now-a-days books with a sequel or trilogy are the bestsellers.

Now then have you had your fill of treats? Let us know your thoughts and feelings toward the interview, OSC, Earth Unaware, The Ender’s Game Film or anything not related to the interview in the comments below.

Viola Davis Talks Ender’s Game

Blackfilm.com recently interviewed Viola Davis, who plays Major Anderson. The interview consisted of questions about her newly released movie “Won’t Back Down” and upcoming  projects, including Ender’s Game. Though briefly mentioned, she is asked the big question every actor is presented with when they take up a role in a book-to-film adaption, “Did you get a chance to read [Ender's Game]?” It’s the one question every fan wants to hear the answer to and always the one of first priority. To my surprise (some of you may have already known this) but Viola Davis did not read the book Ender’s Game when filming nor has she done so after.

“In the book Major Anderson is actually a male. I just felt like this is a different character and I didn’t feel like I could learn anything from reading the book.” She goes on to say it wouldn’t be the same as if studying the psychological disorder of a character and that is was more valuable for her this way.

To some degree I agree with Mrs. Davis. Major Anderson has a small role in the book and with all film adaptions we are conscious that story lines, setting, plots and characters can change at different degree’s that only the director knows, so maybe this male to female switch doesn’t need the books story but a fresh compilation by the director and actor.

Here is a video of the interview with Viola Davis. To get straight to the Ender’s Game question you can forward to the 8:49 mark.

Nonso Anozie Speaks Ender’s Game

At London’s Comic-Con RedCarpetNewsTV got to interview Nonso Anozie who plays Sergeant Dap. Anozie speaks about his character as being “a hard-ass on Ender”. How he is “a bad guy, but at the end you really start to see that there’s a reason why he’s been so hard on him.”

He follows up with saying he “had a great time working with Asa Butter[field]“, who he also got the chance to work with on Nanny McPhee Returns. Anozie also mentions the older actors of Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Viola Davis. “It was a really amazing experience I’ve had.”

An interesting part of the interview is at the end where Anozie teases on some of the film progression.

“We’ve got some little bits to do. I’ma go back to meet everybody again, because we’ve got a little bit left to do on it…It’s going to have a lot of things that no one’s seen before- a lot of computer graphics, a lot of visual effects. That people- kind of cutting edge. Stuff that nobody’s ever seen before.”

With a great cast and working on the film based upon one of the best Sci-Fi novels, who wouldn’t have an amazing time on set? Here is the video for the interview from RedCarpetNewsTV.

Ender’s Game Blog: Production Designer Duo

In the aftermath of production on Ender’s Game we tend to look back at the process that got us (yes, production crew, cast and us, the fans) to this point. That is what the new update on the Ender’s Game blog is all about.

Ben Procter and Sean Haworth — our amazing Production Designer duo — were tasked with bringing a difficult piece of Science Fiction to life… and they were more than up to the challenge.

Together, they created a unique blend of technology and humanity that made the ENDER’S GAME sets eventually seem like home.

As a duo, they played to their strengths, mixing a strong Illustration and Visual Effects Art Direction background (Ben), with the application of a physical set build and Art Directing (Sean).  It turned into a symbiotic “divide and conquer”, and the results speak volumes.

When asked about the Formic worlds both Ben and Sean’s replies are given with such excitement that “Even in a short conversation, their excitement for the project is tangible.  And it certainly helps that they were already fans of the novel.”

Ben describes his interest in the two cultures of Human and Formics:

“We tried to imbue the spaces and vehicles with a gritty, engineered realism that would help sell the seriousness of the training our hero kids are going through. The visual style of the Formics, on the other hand, needed to be both exotic and beautiful to represent a society not deserving of extinction.”

They were already fans when working on the film. Ben “read the founding short-story at age twelve, and has been a fan ever since.” As for Sean, he read the book later in his twenties deftly remembering the “science and technology” but as well as the horror of human elements behind the story.

“I was torn between wanting to be Ender but never having to be faced with that kind of a future,” he said.

I think we all had that feeling at one time.

Sadly, for the time being this update is the last for the blog as tweeted by Roberto Orci.

So, as the Ender’s Game Blog ends the post “Farewell… for now.”

Ender’s Game Poster…

For a few days this poster of Ender’s Game has been going around being claimed the official movie poster. We got word from the studio that the poster is “just something mocked up for use at the 2012 Licensing Expo going on in Las Vegas.”

Again, this is not the official poster for the movie. Eventually, the official one will be different from this piece.

Photoshoot for the Ender’s Game film

So with production wrapped up, the cast are either back in LA or at work on another movie. Most likely their is editing for the movie going on at the moment but we have heads up that there is also a photoshoot with the cast. Jimmy Jax Pinchak (Peter Wiggin) tweeted this yesterday:

Also, Aramis Knight tweeted about an Ender’s Game reunion:

If they are doing a photoshoot for the cast then hopefully soon we can be delighted with character posters or an official movie poster for the film. How exciting would it be to finally see the whole crew in character?
